MSD’s chemical manufacturing facility at Ponders End at Enfield has been operational since 1957, growing in line with the increasing need for high quality chemicals for Merck & Co., Inc.’s medicines.

Today, processed chemicals produced at Ponders End are shipped to manufacturing sites around the world.  Many of them will be used in our UK tablet manufacturing facility at Cramlington to make some of Merck & Co., Inc.’s best-selling products.

Chemical Industries Associations Stakeholder Relations Award:
In July 2005, the Ponders End facility was awarded the Chemical Industries Associations Stakeholder Relations Award.  The award recognises the facility for outstanding work in the community and with stakeholders.  The success is owed to a string of activities, including the regeneration of a local business area and starting up a Neighbour of Choice Initiative to promote the industry through links with education and government funded projects.

Sponsored by URS Corporation, the Stakeholder Relations Award encourages CIA member companies to establish and operate appropriate communications programmes.  The judges look for sites that have made positive efforts to earn the trust and goodwill of stakeholders, and for creative initiatives that set a good example to other sites.

Merck Sharp & Dohme at Ponders End have worked with a range of stakeholders from schools and the local police, to development agencies and councils. Efforts to establish a partnership with the local council resulted in new business investment and the fostering of an appreciation of science and technology in schools.

Ponders End maintains an excellent environmental and safety record, having received:

• The prestigious British Safety Council's 'Sword of Honour' award for the safest companies eleven times.
• Chemical Industries Association (CIA) - Diamond Safety Award – Presented to a company who has achieved a Lost Time Accident Rate set annually by the CIA for 10 consecutive years.  The award was received in July 2005.
• The Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) – Representatives from the site received the ROSPA Gold Award for Occupational Health & Safety at the ROSPA Awards ceremony held at the Hilton, NEC Birmingham.
• Attained World Class Status for Engineering at Ponders End under the Asset Management Information Service (AMIS) scheme, scoring in the top 5% of all industry sectors globally.
• A National Award presented to the site by The Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of the valuable contributions made in the Engineering Education Scheme.
