IN SHORT, WHAT'S OUR STORY?

The title of our story is "Inventing For Life". And central to that story are the incredible people we employ, the valued partners we embrace, and ultimately the patients whose lives we positively impact by making them healthier and happier.

Our people, are our greatest asset - whether creating medicines to address the world's most urgent health challenges, developing technology-based healthcare solutions, or ensuring a steady supply of essential vaccines, they all embrace the spirit of invention... relentlessly seeking innovative, novel and intelligent ways to help ensure those healthier, happier lives for patients across the UK.

We create powerful partnerships because we know we can change the world, but we know we can't do it alone. Our much valued collaborations with the NHS, leading universities, cutting-edge research bodies and non-profit organisations are intended to invent ways to transform healthcare in the UK and around the world.

We do it all for patients, their families, their friends, their loved ones - their lives. For us, vaccines and medicines are the greatest of inventions... the power they have to save, improve and extend the lives of individuals is immeasurable.

That's why we're ALL about "Inventing For Life".

OVER 80 YEARS IN THE UK

Our presence in the UK goes back a long way. For over 80 years, we have been inventing for life researching, developing, and supplying new medicines and vaccines that prevent and treat diseases that occur at every stage of life. We have 6 sites across the UK and plans are also underway to open a new state of the art discovery research centre and HQ in London.

EIGHT MEDICINES DEVELOPED IN THE UK

Eight of our medicines were developed with the help of UK scientists at facilities here in the UK and twelve are manufactured in the North East.

OVER £40M ON RESEARCH EACH YEAR

Each year we spend in the region of
£40 million on research with the NHS and UK academic centres.

40 HOURS OF PAID VOLUNTEERING EACH YEAR

Many of our team want to help their communities very directly so we ensure they can - our employees are entitled to 40 hours of paid volunteering each year.

IN THE UK LAST YEAR WE REACHED OVER
2 MILLION PEOPLE THROUGH OUR VACCINES

Our scientists developed some of the first medicines to treat hypertension, HIV and hepatitis C and we developed the first ever vaccine to help prevent certain HPV related cancers (now used in 130 countries). In the UK alone, last year we reached over 2 million people through our vaccines.

WE CONDUCT APPROXIMATELY
100 CLINICAL STUDIES IN THE UK

Currently, here in the UK, we're conducting approximately 100 clinical studies involving over 3,000 patients.

WE EMBRACE EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY

We know talent and aptitude comes in many forms and fully embrace equality and diversity: our workforce is aged 19-70yrs; 45% of our senior human health team are women; and two thirds of our senior leadership team are women, including our managing director.

OUR PEOPLE

AT MSD IN THE UK WE INVENT FOR A MORE HOPEFUL TOMORROW

Together with our patients, partnerships and people we use our breadth of talent and skills to develop long-term solutions that change patients' lives. Because for us, we're inventing for life and that's what gets us out of bed in the morning. Watch our film to find out why we're proud to work at MSD.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT MSD

What do a mountain rescue volunteer, a skateboarder and an anti-gravity yoga enthusiast all have in common? They all work at MSD, and they’re all driven by a desire to improve the lives of patients, their families and their friends.

Our video series, Behind the Scenes at MSD with Jason Bradbury, shares our purpose, ‘Inventing for Life’, and celebrates our greatest asset – our people. If you want to find out more about MSD from Lisa, our mountain rescue volunteer (who also works in our Virology team), Ben, our resident skateboarder (who is also a trainee clinical trials co-ordinator), Sana, who’s off to Africa as part of our Fellowship programme, or Susannah, an anti-gravity yoga enthusiast (who also works in HR), then dive into the first film of our three-part series.

The second instalment of our video series, Behind the Scenes at MSD with Jason Bradbury, takes a look at the journey a pharmaceutical company has to embark on to get medicines to patients. Follow Rob, one of our Medical Scientific Liaisons, and find out how his role impacts clinical trials. Next we meet Michael, a process operator based in packaging, to see how his role ensures the quality and efficiency of medicines at the end of the manufacturing process. And finally we join Kate, a product testing analyst, who tests the stability of products across their shelf life.

OUR INVENTIONS

MSD is a top five global pharmaceutical company that has researched, developed and manufactured medicines in the UK for over 80 years from our sites in Cramlington, Hoddesdon, Milton Keynes, Maidenhead, Edinburgh Scotland and London. Our heritage is rich in pioneering discoveries and medicine milstones... we aspire to a future that promises even greater things.

Scientific invention is at the heart of what we do and today we are at the forefront of some of the world's most urgent global population and animal health challenges, including oncology, hepatitis C, antibiotic resistance, Alzheimer's disease, Ebola and cardiovascular disease.
